The Truth Behind Rituals and Martyrdom

Exposing Ritual Innovations and the Legacy of Imam Hussain (R.A.) By Muhammad Zaeem

INTRODUCTION:

The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A.) is not a call to mourn with pain. It is a call to live with purpose. In Islam, the life of a martyr is our path, and his stand is our standard. We do not surrender to injustice. We do not remain silent in the face of cruelty.

Karbala was not about self-harm, it was about self-sacrifice for truth.

QUR'AN REFERENCES:

"Do not say of those who are killed in the way of Allah, 'They are dead.' Rather, they are alive, but you do not perceive." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:154)

"And do not kill yourselves. Surely, Allah is ever Merciful to you." (Surah An-Nisa 4:29)

HADITH REFERENCES:

"The eyes shed tears, the heart grieves, but the tongue only says what pleases our Lord." (Sahih Bukhari)

"He is not one of us who strikes the cheeks, tears the clothes, and cries out with the cries of Jahiliyyah." (Sahih Muslim)

"Hussain is from me, and I am from Hussain. May Allah love those who love Hussain." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi)

CORE TRUTHS:

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) wept for his son Ibrahim, his wife Khadijah, his uncle Hamza, and his grandson Hussain (A.S.), but never allowed self-harming rituals. Islam forbids wailing, self-harm, and acts of mourning rooted in Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). Mourning with sabr, reflection, and dignity is the true Sunnah.
Imam Hussain's martyrdom was for the preservation of Islam, not for cultural pain rituals.

ABOUT HASSAN SABBAH:

Hassan Sabbah was a Nizari Isma'ili, not a Twelver Shia. He was totally against Sunni and Twelver Shia.

He created a secretive and extreme sect emphasizing absolute loyalty, esoteric belief, and symbolic rituals.

Though he didn't create matam, his miss lead teachings opened space for emotional rituals.

Later, fabricated stories and unreliable books were added to justify rituals like matam, zanjeer, and passion plays, none supported by Qur'an or Hadith.

THE DAMAGE:

These practices created sectarian divisions and confusion within the Ummah.

Many sincere Shia Muslims today believe these rituals are from Islam, unaware they are later innovations.

TRUE MOURNING OF HUSSAIN (R.A.):

What It Is Not
Cutting the body, Crying theatrically, Zanjeer rituals, Historical myths

What It Truly Is: Speaking against injustice,  Living with courage and sabr, Speak truth like Hussain R.A, Qur'an and Sunnah remembrance.

CONCLUSION:

Imam Hussain (R.A.) died not to be mourned with blood, but to awaken the soul of this Ummah. If we truly love Ahl al-Bayt, we must walk their path, not invent one of our own. Let us revive Karbala through prayer, justice and truth, not through rituals the Prophet (SAW) never
allowed.
